Estimate your gratuity
How the gratuity is worked out
Across much of the Gulf the standard end-of-service formula works like this: your daily wage is your last basic monthly salary divided by 30. For each of your first five years you earn 21 days of that daily wage; for every year beyond five you earn 30 days. Partial years are usually counted pro-rata. The total is commonly capped at two years' basic pay. Example: a basic salary of 800 over 6 years gives a daily wage of 26.67; the first 5 years earn 105 days and the 6th year earns 30 days โ 135 days ร 26.67 โ 3,600.
Basic salary vs total package
Gratuity is calculated on your basic salary, not your total package โ allowances for housing, transport, phone and bonuses are normally excluded. Since basic pay is often only 50โ60% of the total, the gratuity is smaller than many expect. Enter only the basic figure shown on your contract or payslip for an accurate estimate.
End-of-service rules across the Gulf
The idea is similar across the GCC โ a lump sum based on your final basic salary and years of service โ but the details differ by country and by whether you resigned or were dismissed. As a rough guide:
| Country | Typical basis |
|---|---|
| UAE | 21 days' pay per year (first 5 years), 30 days' pay per year after |
| Saudi Arabia | Half a month per year (first 5 years), one month per year after |
| Qatar | At least 3 weeks' pay per year of service |
| Kuwait | 15 days per year (first 5 years), one month per year after |
| Oman | Based on basic salary and length of service |
These are general guidelines only โ your contract, unpaid leave and the reason for leaving all affect the final figure, so always check your local labour law.
