What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measure that relates your weight to your height. It is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (kg/m²). The World Health Organization uses these categories for adults:
- Below 18.5 — underweight
- 18.5 – 24.9 — healthy weight
- 25.0 – 29.9 — overweight
- 30.0 and above — obesity
BMI is a population-level screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes can score "overweight" while being very fit, and it may underestimate body fat in older adults. Waist circumference, body composition and blood markers give a fuller picture — discuss your results with a healthcare professional.
Frequently asked questions
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. It is less reliable for athletes, pregnant women, children (who use age-specific percentile charts) and the elderly. Some populations, including many South Asian countries, use lower cutoffs (e.g. 23 for overweight) because health risks begin at lower BMI values.
What is a healthy weight for my height?
The calculator shows the weight range that corresponds to a BMI of 18.5–24.9 for your height, which is the WHO healthy range for adults.
How can I improve my BMI?
Gradual, sustainable changes work best: balanced meals, regular physical activity and adequate sleep. Consult a doctor or dietitian before starting a major weight-change program.
