Unit Conversion Made Simple

The world runs on two measurement systems, and life keeps making you translate between them. Here are the conversions that actually come up — with tricks to remember them.

Length: the travel conversions

1 mile = 1.609 km and 1 km = 0.621 miles. Quick trick: km ≈ miles × 1.6, or use the "half plus a bit" rule the other way — 100 km is about 62 miles. For height forms: 1 foot = 30.48 cm, 1 inch = 2.54 cm, so 5 ft 7 in = 152.4 + 17.8 = 170.2 cm. Screen sizes are measured diagonally in inches everywhere — a "15.6-inch" laptop is a 39.6 cm diagonal.

Weight: luggage, gym and gold

1 kg = 2.205 lb — so a 23 kg airline allowance is about 50 lb, and a "45 lb" gym plate is 20.4 kg. Cooking swaps: 1 ounce = 28.35 g. Temperature: the odd one out

Temperature scales don't share a zero, so you can't just multiply. Exact: °F = °C × 9⁄5 + 32 (and back: °C = (°F − 32) × 5⁄9). Quick mental estimate: double the Celsius and add 30 — 25 °C ≈ 80 °F (exact 77). Handy anchors: 0 °C = 32 °F (freezing), 37 °C = 98.6 °F (body temperature), 100 °C = 212 °F (boiling), and −40° is the same in both scales.

Why conversions go wrong

Most conversion errors come from rounding too early or converting twice. Convert once, at the end of a calculation, using the full factor. The stakes can be spectacular: NASA lost the 125-million-dollar Mars Climate Orbiter in 1999 because one team worked in pound-force units and another in newtons. Your luggage fee is a smaller tragedy, but the lesson is the same — let a calculator hold the precise factors.

Units that share a name but not a value

Several units exist in more than one version, which causes genuine errors in recipes, shipping and fuel figures.

• Gallon — US 3.79 L vs Imperial 4.55 L, a 20% gap. US and UK fuel-economy figures are not comparable.
• Pint — US 473 ml vs Imperial 568 ml.
• Ton — metric tonne 1,000 kg, US short ton 907 kg, UK long ton 1,016 kg.
• Fluid ounce vs ounce — volume vs weight. They only coincide for water.
• Cup — US 240 ml, metric 250 ml, Japanese 200 ml. Enough to matter in baking.
• Tola — 11.66 g, standard for gold across South Asia.

Chaining conversions without drift

When no direct factor exists, convert through a common unit — but round only at the end. Rounding at each step compounds the error.

Converting 5 miles to metres: going through kilometres with rounding gives 5 × 1.6 = 8 km = 8,000 m. Carrying full precision gives 5 × 1.60934 = 8.0467 km = 8,047 m. The rounded route is out by 47 metres — trivial for a walk, significant for materials or fuel planning.

A useful discipline borrowed from science is to write the units alongside the numbers and cancel them like fractions. If your units don't cancel to the answer you wanted, you have multiplied where you should have divided — the error shows up before the number does.

Precision, and knowing when to stop

More decimal places do not mean more accuracy; they mean false confidence. If you measured a room as "about 4 metres", converting to 13.1233595801 feet implies a precision your tape measure never had.

The rule is to keep roughly the same number of significant figures you started with. A measurement of 4 m becomes 13 ft, not 13.12. One of 4.25 m becomes 13.9 ft. This matters most when converting for someone else — a spec sheet quoting eight decimals tells the reader the author didn't understand their own measurement.
