How marks percentage is calculated

The formula is simple: percentage = obtained marks ÷ total marks × 100. If you scored 430 out of 550, that's 430 ÷ 550 × 100 = 78.18%. For multiple subjects, add up all obtained marks and divide by the sum of all total marks — don't average the individual percentages, because subjects with different maximum marks would be weighted wrongly.

Typical grade bands

Most boards and universities in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh use bands close to these: A+ (90%+), A (80–89%), B (70–79%, First Division), C (60–69%, Second Division), D (50–59%), E/F (below 50%). Simple vs weighted percentage

When every subject has the same total marks, a simple percentage (total obtained ÷ total maximum × 100) is correct. But if subjects carry different maximum marks or credit weights, you need a weighted average — otherwise a small-weight subject counts as much as a major one. Always add the raw marks and raw totals rather than averaging the individual percentages.

Turning a percentage into a rough GPA

Many universities map percentage to GPA, though the exact scale varies. As a rough guide on a 4.0 scale: 85%+ ≈ 4.0, 75–84% ≈ 3.3–3.7, 65–74% ≈ 2.7–3.0, 55–64% ≈ 2.0–2.3. Use our GPA Calculator for a credit-weighted figure, and always confirm with your institution's official conversion.

Working out the marks you still need

The more useful question is usually not "what did I get" but "what do I need next time". If you know your current aggregate and your target, you can work out the required score exactly.

Suppose you have completed three papers of 100 marks each and scored 62, 71 and 68 — a total of 201 out of 300, or 67%. You want 75% overall across five papers (500 marks). You need 375 marks in total, so the remaining two papers must bring in 375 − 201 = 174 out of 200, an average of 87 each. Seeing that number early is what tells you whether a target is realistic or whether you should adjust it.

Percentage, aggregate and CGPA — how they differ

Boards and universities use these terms loosely, which causes real confusion at admission time. Percentage is marks obtained ÷ total marks × 100 for a single exam or subject. Aggregate is the same calculation across every subject combined, which is what most admission forms actually want. CGPA is a grade-point average on a 4.0 or 10.0 scale, not a percentage at all.

Converting between them is approximate, not exact. A widely used rule of thumb for the 10-point scale is percentage ≈ CGPA × 9.5, so a CGPA of 8.2 is roughly 78%. Different boards apply different multipliers, so always use your own institution's published conversion when it exists — a rough conversion on an official form can cost you a place.

Grace marks, moderation and best-of rules

Your raw score is not always your final score. Many boards apply moderation (adjusting marks across a paper that proved unusually hard), grace marks (a small number added to help a candidate reach a pass or clear a single failing subject), or a best-of rule where only your strongest four or five subjects count toward the aggregate.

That last one matters most for admissions. If your board counts best-of-five, a weak sixth subject may not affect your aggregate at all — so calculate with and without it before assuming the worst. Check your board's rules rather than guessing, because these policies change year to year.
